Bri-Bet Brings Back Training Division

Certified Training Now Available For All Licensed Security Guards in Maryland

Baltimore Md –

When the new state fiscal year kicked off July 1, it included a mandated enhancement requirement for all holders of a “guard card” in Maryland.

This card is carried by every security guard as evidence that the holder has completed all training necessary to receive certification.  Without it, guards and their employers would not be eligible to work security details in Maryland.

The 2025 new year (January 1) was established as the implementation date for guards to complete the new training program.

That’s when things became challenging for Bri-Bet Security Solutions.

“We had to find a way to get our staff trained and in a hurry,” said Jeff Legeer, Bri-Bet Communications Director.  Added difficulty ensued when there was no one offering the training.

“Without the certification, we would not be eligible to participate in “EMMA,” the state’s online procurement program nor work any other security contracts in the state,” said Legeer. “That makes up about 15% of our annual revenue,” he added.

Bri-Bet employs nearly 200 licensed guards many pursuing second careers following their time in law enforcement and the military. Faced with a make or buy conundrum, Bri-Bet elected to take advantage of its own workforce with training credentials.

“Why wouldn’t we? The state was not offering classes yet and we couldn’t just sit around with the deadline nearing,” said Brian Kunkel, Bri-Bet CEO.

Within 90 days, the company re-established its dormant Training Division, developed two separate curriculums, made strategic hires including identifying a cadre of trainers and beta tested the training using company employees.

“We were on our way but had one major hurdle to clear…certification of curriculum and instructors by the Maryland State Police,” said Legeer.

That certification was received from the State of Maryland in August.  The company has conducted several training classes internally and is now offering classes to all security guards and security guard companies in Maryland (See related story for curriculum, dates, locations and admission requirements and fees.)

There are two class offerings (initial and refresher).  Following successful completion and examination score, students will receive their certification and be issued a new guard card by the Maryland State Police making them eligible to work nearly anywhere in Maryland as a security guard.

Some sites require more extensive training, background checks and security clearances.
